Follow this guide to make sure your keyboard stickers apply cleanly and stay stuck for as long as possible.
Before You Start
You’ll get the best results if you prepare properly.
What you’ll need:
- A clean, dry cloth or paper towel
- Isopropyl alcohol (recommended) or a mild cleaner
- Good lighting
- A steady surface
Step 1: Clean the Keyboard
This is the most important step.
- Turn off and unplug your keyboard or laptop
- Lightly dampen a cloth with isopropyl alcohol
- Wipe the top surface of each key to remove oils, dust, and residue
- Allow the keys to fully dry
Avoid using strong solvents like acetone, as these can damage keycaps.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout
Before peeling anything:
- Identify the correct sticker for each key
- Check the orientation (top vs bottom of the key)
- Decide where the sticker should sit (usually centred, slightly toward the top of the key)
Taking a minute here prevents mistakes later.
Step 3: Apply the Sticker
- Peel the sticker carefully from the backing
- Hold it by the edges to avoid touching the adhesive
- Lightly place it onto the key without pressing
- Adjust its position if needed
- Once aligned, press down firmly
Apply pressure across the entire sticker, especially the edges.
Step 4: Set the Adhesive
- Press and hold each sticker for 5–10 seconds
- Run a fingertip firmly around the edges
For best results, avoid heavy typing for at least 30 minutes after application.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying stickers to dirty or oily keys
- Touching the adhesive before placement
- Rushing alignment
- Using cleaning chemicals after application
Aftercare and Longevity
To maximise lifespan:
- Keep hands clean and dry while typing
- Avoid excessive heat or direct sunlight
- Clean the keyboard gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth
With proper application and care, your stickers should stay in place for a long time.
